A look at Sustainability in Wine

Following our Bordeaux wine tasting, we have been investigating sustainable processes in the wine industry. Bordeaux is on track to become carbon neutral by 2050 - re-opening its harbour to freight sailboats!

Sustainability is a wide term that refers to the awareness of the long term impact of human activities on the planet.

Organic and biodynamic grape production methods make use of practices that have sustainability at their core, in that they are concerned with minimising the negative environmental impact of farming and food production, and promote soil health.

Wider environmental wines take in packaging and distribution, how the whole supply chain uses energy. International Wineries for Climate Action are a group of leading producers who seek to become carbon neutral.
Different sustainability programmes exist around the world, with guidelines across production and operations.

The certification is legally defined and can be displayed by logos on the labels but these can vary by country (shown below).
